A renowned British bicycle manufacturer is set to enter voluntary liquidation after nearly 80 years of crafting bespoke bicycle frames.
Mercian Cycles, established in 1946 and based in Derby, has built a legacy of handcrafting custom bikes throughout its history. The company’s creations have been favoured by cyclists setting world records and adventurers travelling the globe.
The Opus Business Advisory Group, representing the company, confirmed that Mercian Cycles is entering voluntary liquidation. When approached by the BBC, the owner declined to comment.
One notable cyclist, Leigh Timmis, embarked on a 44,000-mile journey around the world from 2010 to 2017 on a Mercian bike. Timmis praised the bike, stating, "It was the perfect bike for the job. It was specifically made for that touring adventure." He highlighted the custom-built nature of Mercian's products, tailored to each rider's style, which contributed to the comfort and durability of his journey. "It didn't even get through a full set of wheels; they went round the world, and the frame endured many challenges," Timmis said. "They provided such a strong bike; it could do anything."
Reflecting on Mercian’s closure, he added, "Mercian is iconic of Derby for me, almost as much as the Rams or Rolls-Royce. To think we will be without Mercian now is sad."
Over the years, Mercian Cycles has operated from various locations in Derby. In 1971, it moved from London Road to a larger premises in Normanton, and in 1984, it relocated to Alvaston. In 2018, the shop closed, and all operations were consolidated at its workshop on Pontefract Street.
In 2006, Sir Paul Smith designed a special range of bikes to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary. He remarked, "They're very light, hand cut, hand painted; they've done a beautiful job."
